October 2, 2024Gingivitis is characterized by redness and swelling of the gums. This condition is the body’s response to the presence of an irritant, usually the accumulation of plaque (bacteria) and tartar on the surface of the tooth. Gingivitis is a reversible condition and will disappear without causing permanent damage after a dentist removes the plaque and tartar. Certain conditions can affect the severity of gingivitis, such as hormonal fluctuations during adolescence and pregnancy, as well as certain medications.
